Security Regulations and Florida Boat Insurance

With one of the most relaxed lifestyles in the country and some of the most stunning beaches, it is inevitable that the seas surrounding most of the state are a key recreation activity. Having the correct Florida boat insurance to protect you financially in case of an accident or loss of property is therefore a key part of boating. Did you know that since 2001, boaters have extra rules that they must abide by or risk severe fines, or even jail?

Introduced by the Department of Homeland Security in the wake of increased terrorist attacks, boaters are required to slow to minimum speed if they are within 500 yards of any U.S. Navy vessel and proceed as per the Commanding Officer’s instructions. Vessels are not allowed to approach any U.S. Naval vessel closer than a distance of 100 yards.

Other security measures now required by the department include the avoiding of commercial ports; observing security zones and not stopping or anchoring beneath a bridge or in a channel. Report anyone acting suspiciously to local law enforcement agencies or the U.S. Coast Guard. More information on security zones is available at the Coast Guard’s website .
