Welcome To The Peru Central School District!

PCSD is the largest school district on the New York side of Lake Champlain, as measured by our enrollment of approximately 1,900 students. It encompasses 160.8 miles. In 2018, the District offered full-time, part-time, temporary and substitute employment to more 500 individuals.

Peru is a town in the eastern part of Clinton County, NY, just south of Plattsburgh, NY. Located just off Interstate 87 Exit 35, it is approximately 150 miles north of the State Capital Albany, NY, and 74 miles south of Montreal, Canada. It is also located approximately 40 miles from Lake Placid, NY, home of the 1932 and 1980 Olympics.

Nestled between the Adirondack Mountains and Lake Champlain, the Town of Peru was formed from Plattsburgh and Willsborough on Dec. 28, 1792. A part of it was annexed back to Willsborough in 1799 and the towns of Ausable and Black Brook were taken off in 1839. Its present boundaries are the towns of Saranac, Schuyler Falls and Plattsburgh on the north, the towns of Ausable and Black Brook on the south, Lake Champlain on the east and the town of Black Brook on the west. The area of the town is approximately seventy-nine square miles. Some of the early settlers thought that the mountains surrounding the town resembled those of Peru, South America. Hence, the origin of the town’s name. The present population of Peru is 6,998 according to the 2010 census.

The area also boasts SUNY Plattsburgh, Clinton Community College, Plattsburgh International Airport, and State Parks Ausable Point, Point Au Roche & Macomb.

Peru has been named the Most Affordable Small Town in the state of New York by Business Insider Magazine. The magazine listed one town in each of the 50 states. Its ranking focused on communities of 1,000 to 10,000 residents whose households spend less than 30 percent of their annual income on housing costs. The magazine found that 89.7 percent of the homes in the Town of Peru meet that criteria. The magazine also referenced the community’s “pleasant, tourist drawing apple orchards and dairy farms.” Good schools, affordable housing, the region’s favorable business climate, a well-respected medical center and regional hospitals, colleges and universities and other amenities are keys to this area’s success. And the ability to compete with other communities in the Northeast is further enhanced by national recognition.
