Vessel Types

Research Vessels

Types of Research Vessels can be (but are not limited to): Government or College/University owned/operated, Privately owned/operated, & USCG Inspected or uninspected. Coverages insure an owner against damages to both hull and property and indemnity (P&I).

Inspected Passenger Vessels

Types of Inspected Passenger Vessel operations can be (but are not limited to): Sport Fishing, Sightseeing, Whale Watching, Dive Boat, & Dinner/Cruise. Coverages insure an owner against damages to both hull and property and indemnity (P&I).

Uninspected Passenger Vessels

Types of Uninspected Passenger Vessels include: 6 pack charter boats, 12 pack charter boats (allowable by the USCG if over 100 GRT), & small outboard engine powered charter boats mostly carrying less than 6 passengers. Coverages insure an owner against damages to both hull and property and indemnity (P&I).

Pilot Vessels

We have a special policy tailored for Pilots which protects the pilot whose Association owns the vessels.

Yachts

For insurance company purposes, yacht means pleasure craft in general and we have several companies ready to quote this class.

Fixed Gear Commercial Fishing

Of the many kinds of commercial fishing techniques, for insurance purposes there are two broad groups: Fixed Gear and Mobile Gear. Fixed gear includes rod & reel, powered rod & reel or hook troll, but generally means trapping or potting, and gillnetting, where the catching implement is set, soaked and later retrieved.

Mobile Gear Commercial Fishing

Other than line trolling, mobile gear is defined for insurance purposes as methods of fishing that use towed gear such as nets or dredges that are set out and hauled back while the vessel and gear are underway, typically with a cycle measured in hours or minutes.

Tug & Tow

Wells & Co is not a major market for tug & barge fleets but does entertain submissions for small, typically family owned and locally operated towing accounts and for the various franchises for pleasure craft assistance operations.

Work Boats

"Work Boat" is a ‘catch-all’ term for many types of marine businesses including harbor operations for yacht waste water collection, baykeeper functions, some marine construction businesses, mooring services, aquaculture tending craft, and generally refers to small scale inshore work of any kind not associated with wild harvest or passenger carrying.

Builder’s Risk

This form of insurance is applied to exposures where new boats are being built and the owner needs his own coverage. Sustantial rebuilds of older vessels also fit this category.
