Lake Flaming Gorge combines the size and recreation opportunities of Lake Powell with a solitude and tranquility that is increasingly rare in the Lower 48 states. It is for this reason that it has become a haven for boating, jetskiing, waterskiing and fishing. It's an authentically Western on-the-water escape.

Fishing

It may seem odd that some of the best coldwater fishing in the country is found in this arid desert environment. But Lake Flaming Gorge has rightfully earned accolades for its trophy fishing.

Top on the list is fishing for lake trout, which can be difficult to catch. An average angler can expect to put in many hours between fish, but during the summer months and generally under the ice, lake trout can be found at 70- to 120-foot depths, where they gorge and grow to enormous size.

Linwood Bay, next to Lucerne Marina, is always a hot spot to catch the big ones. Rainbow trout are found throughout the reservoir and usually become active during April. By May or early June, kokanee salmon action picks up with the fish suspended 25 to 30 feet deep in open water or pelagic areas. Even smallmouth bass can be found in the lake, along the rocky shoreline habitat throughout the Gorge.

Boating

Boaters have their pick of nine paved boat ramps and three full-service marinas for full days of waterskiing, jetskiing or cruising in a pontoon or houseboat. Rent a variety of boats and boat slips at Buckboard Marina near McKinnon, Wyoming. Visit Lucerne Valley Marina near Manila, Utah for your houseboat, small boat, kayak or paddleboard rentals. The marina also offers storage and repair needs. Cedar Springs Marina near Dutch John, Utah offers an array of boat, paddleboard and kayak rentals, as well as fishing tours.

From I-80, take Hwy. 191 south for 17 miles into Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.

Other facilities within the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area include 18 U.S. Forest Service campgrounds (four boat-in campgrounds). And when you’re not on the water, you can stop by the two visitors centers, trek 200 miles of trails and camp at one of the 600 campsites.

Two main lodges service Flaming Gorge Country and offer restaurants, lodging, fishing guides, raft rentals, horseback rides and mountain bike rentals. These are located in the alpine areas and offer accessibility to many scenic trails, mountain lakes, and the tailwaters of the Green River and Lake Flaming Gorge.
