CLUTIER — Marie Adean Yuska Hess, 90, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Clutier, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Cedar Rapids; services 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Traer, with burial at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Clutier. Visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home, Tama, (641) 484-3400, with a 3 p.m. vigil service. Memorials directed to the family.

DENVER — Ann Louise Rossol, 64, of Denver, died at home Saturday, Jan. 18.

She was born Jan. 3, 1956, in Eldora to Floyd and Doris Sinning. On Nov. 13, 1998, she married Hubert Bernard Rossol at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. He preceded her in death Dec. 11, 2015.

Ann graduated from Crestwood High School, went to school in Waterloo and got a job as a ward secretary at Allen Memorial Hospital. in 1975, she was still employed there as a monitor tech, having worked there more than 40 years.

Survived by: her siblings, Dennis (Cathy) of Hayden, Idaho, Roger (Janet) of Kasson, Minn., Mark (Pam) of Mantorville, Minn., Larry of Klemme, Norma (Charles) Kenning of Racine, Minn., and Karla (Ron) Kenning of Eagan, Minn.; many nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and -nephews.

Preceded in death by: her husband; her parents; and a nephew, Kevin Sinning.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. today, Jan. 23, at Kaiser Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, with burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call one hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Ann and Hubert loved to travel on cruise ships and took many trips. She loved to travel going on bus trips, seeing the country. Ann was in 4-H, enjoyed sewing and crocheting, making snowflakes and other crafts like bunnies and cabbage patch dolls and clothes for them that she sold craft shows.

Michael R. “Mike” Sires

SHELL ROCK — Michael “Mike” Roy Sires, 64, of Shell Rock, formerly of Janesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

He was born July 4, 1955, in Waukon, son of Roy and Barbara (Gifford) Sires. On May 10, 1975, he married Sheryl Walker at St. Timothy Church in Cedar Falls.

Mike graduated from Central High School in 1973. Over the years he was employed with Clutes Grocery Store, Headford Brothers Foundry, Hawkeye Steel, Advanced Heat Treat and John Deere, where he would eventually retire.

He was one of the first members of the Black Hawk Metro Disc Golf Club and helped officiate the PDGA World Championship in Cincinnati in 1988.

Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Amy Kramer of Shell Rock; a son, Adam (Ashley) Sires of Parkersburg; two grandchildren, Mason and Jordan Kramer; his mother, Barbara Gifford of Waterloo; and a brother, Mervin (Jane) Sires of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by: his father.

Memorial services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Grace Reformed Church in Waterloo. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

On a family camping trip out West, he and his brother Merv ran to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up. Mike also liked to play cards and enjoyed time spent with the same card group for over 50 years. His cousin Mark got him into being a roadie for the Mitchell Pitts Band.

Deacon James Willie Carr

WATERLOO — Deacon James Willie Carr, 67, of Waterloo, died Friday, Jan. 17, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital of vascular dementia.

He was born July 26, 1952, in Waterloo to Will and Carrie Rosalee Scott Carr. He married Carol Hoskins; they were later divorced. He married Patricia Dixon on July 21, 1987.

James attended East High and received his certificate in janitorial services from Hawkeye Community College. He was employed with Black Hawk Waste in Waterloo, becoming disabled in 1990. He also did janitorial work at the church and other duties.

Survived by: his wife; Annie Carr (stepmother) of Waterloo; four sisters, Mary L. “Tut” Alexander of Waterloo, Cheryl and Bernice Carr of Minneapolis, and Annie B. Gayle of Stone Mountain, Ga.; four brothers, Eddie B. (Tambra) Carr of Blaine, Minn., and James, Nathaniel and David (Twiana) Bates, all of Waterloo; two daughters, Monique Carr Hinson of Marion and Kenyetta Scullark of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Damarus and Bruce (Shania) Dixon of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a sister, Dorothy M. Carr; three brothers, Will O. Carr Jr., Tony Carr and Jerry Scott; and a son, Ronald Scullark.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Union Missionary Baptist Church in Waterloo. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and for an hour before services Saturday, all at the church. Sanders Funeral Service is assisting the family.

James accepted Christ at Shilliam Avenue Church of God in Christ. He was ordained as a deacon and started the Male Choir using “God Has Smiled on Me” as his theme song. He loved having family picnics, buying and trading cars. He was loving, caring and a giving person who had empathy for others.

Gwen Schoonover

WAVERLY — Gwendolyn E. Schoonover, 90, of Waverly, died at home Saturday, Jan. 18.

She was born Jan. 6, 1930, in LaPorte, Colo., the daughter of Homer and Ella (Eikenberry) Lucas. She married Leo Perry Schoonover on Sept. 25, 1955, at the First Methodist Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death.

Gwen graduated from Nashua High School in 1947 and attended Cornell College. Following college, she worked at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Gwen worked as a teller at First National Bank in Waverly for many years. She then worked until retirement as a record keeper at Rohlf Memorial Clinic. Following Leo’s stroke in 2005, Gwen cared for him in their home until shortly before his death in 2018.

Gwen was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities including United Methodist Women, choir, funeral and finance committees, and organizing the folding of monthly newsletters.

Survived by: a son, David (Marilyn) Schoonover of Wisconsin; a daughter, LeeAnna (David) Ausberger of Jefferson; six grandchildren, Michael, Sarah, and Leah Schoonover; and Lucas, Sophia, and Nathan Ausberger.

Preceded in death by: her parents; her son, Michael; her brothers, Kent and James; and her husband.

Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Heritage United Methodist Church in Waverly. Visitation will be for an hour before the service.

Gwen had fond memories of playing in the creek at their farm with her brothers. The farm is now the ISU Northeast Iowa Research Farm and Borlaug Learning Center. She and Leo took the trip of a lifetime by driving to Alaska. She stayed active and enjoyed being outdoors, walking, doing yard work, and eating ice-cream, especially with her grandchildren!

PARKERSBURG — Darlene Lavonne Johnson, 89, of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, at UnityPoint Health–Allen Hospital in Waterloo of natural causes.

She was born June 22, 1930, in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Olis Hayes and Rhoda (Singer) Harned. On Feb. 21, 1954, she married DeWayne Henry Johnson at the Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church in Cedar Falls. He preceded her in death May 8, 2009.

Darlene graduated from Cedar Falls High School and attended one year at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She worked for a year at Rath Packing Co., Waterloo. She and her husband farmed south of Parkersburg. Darlene helped in all aspects of farming with DeWayne. She also helped with the Shetland ponies. Darlene worked as a poll worker at the Grundy County elections and as a census taker. In 2006, DeWayne and Darlene moved into Parkersburg.

Darlene was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg, where she served as a treasurer and was part of the Women’s Circle

Survived by: a son, Gary Johnson of Parkersburg; a daughter, Sharon (Steve) Milbrandt of Osage; six grandchildren, Daniel (Sara) Johnson, Mark (Kerri) Johnson, Michael (Brittany) Milbrandt, Megan (Josh) Smith, Ashley (Reed) Kuper and Corey (Amanda) Milbrandt; 13 great-grandchildren, Ava, Mack, Knox, Henry, Jett, Cash, Brooks, Indie, Camden, Madyn, Bryer, Jones and Brynn; a brother, Lynn (Marge) Harned of Cedar Falls; a sister, Jane Hirth of Ackley; two brothers-in-law, David Laurie of Cedar Falls and Ken (Janet) Johnson of Parkersburg; a sister-in-law, Luann Harned of Des Moines.

Preceded in death by: her husband of 55 years; her daughter-in-law, Becky Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Sloane and Sage Milbrandt; her parents; a brother, Hayes Harned; and two sisters, Roberta Lakin and Jackie Laurie.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Bethel Lutheran Church, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Parkersburg. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and one hour before services at the church.

She sewed, had a large vegetable garden on the farm and enjoyed baking. Darlene and DeWayne enjoyed square dancing. Darlene was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. She enjoyed going to coffee with her friends, playing cards and attending her grandchildren’s events. Darlene loved her family and knitted each one of her great-grandchildren a blanket.

Marianna Trerotola

Marianna Trerotola

WAVERLY — Marianna Trerotola, 92, of Edina, Minn., formerly of Waverly, died Sunday, Jan. 19, at Aurora on France Senior Living in Edina, where she lived for the last two years to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law.

She was born March 21, 1927, in Cedar Falls, daughter of Roland and Jane (Eccles) Merner. She married Dr. John F. Trerotola on Aug. 14, 1965, in Cedar Falls. He preceded her in death.

Marianna graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1945, attended the College of William and Mary for two years, and finished her education at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1949. She received her master of education degree from the National College of Education in Evanston, Ill., in 1958. Her teaching career took her around the country including Coronado, Calif., Keokuk, Iowa, and St. Louis, Mo. Her final position was at the National College of Education, where she taught in their kindergarten lab school and in the Teacher Preparation Program. Marianna retired to raise her son. The family then moved to Waverly in 1972.

She was a longtime member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, PEO and was a member Alpha Delta Pi in college.

Survived by: her son, John J. and Beth (Tatinski) Trerotola of Minneapolis.

Preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; a brother, Bill Merner; and many close family and friends.

Memorial service: 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Waverly, with a reception to follow. A visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. Marianna’s burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.

After her impactful career, she continued her passion for travel with family or friends as well as enjoying biking, cross country skiing, and volunteering in the community. She especially relished the time she spent with John J. and Beth in Waverly, Minneapolis and all over the globe.

Virginia Miller

(1920-2020)

Virginia W. “Jinny” Miller, 99, of Waterloo died at the Friendship Village Retirement Center, Waterloo on Wednesday, January 22, 2020. She was born March 3, 1920 in Fairfield, IA, daughter of Stanley Stull and Fannie Eide Watts.

She graduated from Murray High School in 1937 and Osceola Junior College in 1939 with a two-year degree. Following college, she went on to beauty school and became a beautician.

She married Rolland L. Miller on June 7, 1942 at her father’s funeral home in Murray, Iowa; he died October 19, 1990.

After beauty school, she had a hair salon in her home in Grand River, IA for three years. After marrying and during the war years, Dr. Miller set up medical practice and a four-bed hospital in Readlyn where the couple lived. Because of the lack of available nurses during WWII, Virginia assisted her husband administering anesthesia, nursing, cooking and managing all housekeeping duties necessary for running a small rural hospital.

She was an active member of Trinity American Lutheran Church since 1946 and was past president of the Trinity Women’s Group as well as serving on the church board. She served as president of the Iowa Lutheran Women (ELCA), Waterloo Women’s Club, Waterloo Garden Club, Chapter FE PEO, Waterloo PEO Reciprocity Group, Hanna Loer Chapter of Questers and YWCA board president. She was Waterloo’s Mother of the Year in 1972. She was an honorary life member of Allen Hospital Auxiliary, serving on the board for 22 years. As the Miller/Watts family comes from a long line of quilters, Virginia became an expert of Iowa quilt history and spoke frequently to community organizations in the Cedar Valley. She also enjoyed painting, gardening, sewing, quilting, entertaining, reading, playing bridge, and 500.

Jinny is survived by her children: Sherry (Raymond) Yarema‚ Glen Ellyn‚ IL; Julie (David) Jones‚ Minneapolis‚ MN, Son, Dr. Kent Miller‚ Green Valley, AZ. Grandchildren: Kristin (Michael) Nohaile, Kathy (Mike) Hardin, Christopher (Dannah Baynton) Jones, Anne (Steffen) Lutz, and Andrew Miller. Great-grandchildren: Maeve, Nieve, Calder, Beckett and Lea. Sister-in-law: Edith Watts, Fairfax, VA.

Several nephews and nieces: Harvey Miller, Dennis Miller, Janet Pickerall, Ralph Miller, Douglas Miller, Jacqueline Miller, John Watts, Jamie Watts, and Sarah Watts Benecke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolland, daughter-in-law Pam Miller, grandson, Nicholas Jones and brother, David Watts.

Celebration of Life: 12 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Friendship Village Cove Lounge, 3720 Village Place.

Family burial will precede the services at the Waterloo Cemetery, Waterloo.

WATERLOO — Mary C. Steffen, 56, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital.

She was born March 4, 1963, in Waterloo, the daughter of John and Nancy Turner Carpenter. She married Mike Steffen on Oct. 20, 1984, in Waterloo, and they later divorced.

Mary was employed for many years at Carpenter’s Restaurant and most recently at Wendy’s on La Porte Road.

Survived by: her mother, Nancy of Waterloo; two sons, Eddie (Katelyn) Steffen of Waverly and Sam Steffen of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Maverick and McKenna; three sisters, Jean (Neil Goodell) Clark and Susan (Nathan Milius) Hathaway, both of Waterloo, and Linda (Jason) Gambetty of Oregon, Wis.

Preceded in death by: her father, John Carpenter; and her brother, Michael Carpenter.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with inurnment at a later date. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary. SUMNER — Leila Marie Taylor, 91, formerly of Sumner, died Monday, Jan. 20, at Prairie Hills of Independence Assisted Living in Independence.

She was born Jan. 5, 1929, to John and Tillie (Koch) Bock at home in rural Sumner. She married Donald Alan Taylor on Oct. 29, 1950, at St. Paul’s in Sumner. He preceded her in death.

Leila graduated from Sumner High School in 1947. She worked for 1st State Bank in Sumner for more than 20 years. She also worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo and Waskow Cafe and the Polar Club, both in Sumner, for a short period of time.

Survived by: two sons, Alan (Cyndee) Taylor of Independence and Curt (Annette) Taylor of Lisbon, Iowa; two grandchildren, Kyle (Ashley) Taylor of Cedar Falls and Ted (Cassie) Taylor of Iowa City; three great-grandchildren, Rhys Taylor, Nora Taylor, and Levi Taylor; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Bock of Rockford, Ill., and Lois Ann Ritenour, Galesburg, Ill.

Preceded in death by: her husband; her parents; and seven siblings.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at St. Paul Missouri Synod Lutheran Church in Sumner. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 23, at S.K. Rogers Funeral Home, Sumner.

Leila enjoyed bowling and traveled with her husband and sisters after retirement. She loved to spend time with her family, especially completing puzzles with her grandchildren. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Ladies Aid.

SUMNER — Rhonda Lee Rochford, of Sumner, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

She was born May 15, 1955, at the hospital in New Hampton, daughter of Lee and Shirley (Ott) Hoeger. On July 21, 1973, she married Bill Rochford at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner.

Rhonda graduated from Sumner High School in 1973 and continued her education at Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo, where she received her L.P.N. She was a nurse in the area for many years, working at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner prior to the Covenant Clinic in Fairbank.

Rhonda was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and P.E.O.

Survived by: her husband; four children, Jenny (Bob) Schmitz of Fairbank, Mike (Molly) Rochford of Sumner, David (Julie) Rochford of Cedar Rapids, and Tess (John) Schmitz of Cedar Falls; seven grandchildren, Alex (Holly) Schmitz, Ben Schmitz, Courtney Schmitz, Nolan Rochford, Luke Rochford, Anna Rochford, and Emery Schmitz; mother and father, of Sumner; three siblings, Susan (Dale) Schnadt of Sumner, Gary (Ruth) Hoeger of Hawkeye, and Karen (Greg) Miner of Jefferson, S.D.; brothers-in-law, John Rochford of Galesburg, Ill., Patrick (Debra) Rochford of Hawkeye, James (Phyllis) Rochford of Rock, Kan., Mark (Lori) Rochford of Central City, Thomas (Kathleen) Rochford of Fredericksburg, Daniel (Connie) Rochford of Westgate, and Joseph (Pamela) Rochford of Sumner; sisters-in-law, Jean Kacick of Marion, Mary (Timm) Berg of South Elgin, Ill., and Nina (Duane) Schellhorn of Fredericksburg; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

CEDAR FALLS — Eli Richard Deery, 15-month-old son of DJ and Natalie Deery, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, January 19, 2020, in Bloomington, Minn.

He was born Oct. 16, 2018, in Waterloo.

Survived by: his parents, sister Skylar Deery and brother Daniel Deery, all of Cedar Falls; paternal grandparents, Dan and Julie Deery, of Cedar Falls; maternal grandparents, Steve and Jane Harding of Crossville, Tenn., and Brad Craig of Cedar Falls; paternal great-grandmothers, Marlene Deery and Marianne Nemmers; maternal great-grandparents Nolan and JoAnn Craig and Kay Drew, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Preceded in death by: his paternal great-grandfathers, Richard Nemmers and John Deery Sr., his maternal great grandparents, Joseph Drew, Jerry and Faye Harding, and his maternal uncles Nick and Neil Harding.

Eli was such a sweet, loving, and happy boy. His smile was contagious. His favorites included throwing and chasing balls, dancing, being outside, playing with cousins and friends, climbing all over his pet dog, Diesel, and trying to keep up with his brother and sister.

All Eli knew in his short life on earth was love. Fly high, you beautiful angel.

Theresa A. Lozier of Ballston Lake, NY passed peacefully on January 16, 2020, cutting short her 90th trip around the sun.

Theresa is survived by her son Kurt Lozier (Cynthia Eichelman), daughter Kim Lozier (Roger Frederick), and son Kelly Lozier (Deanna); seven grandchildren, Aaron Lozier (Elizabeth), Jared Lozier, Abigale Eichelman, Ethan Eichelman, Samantha Lozier, Allison Mueller (Ulrich) and Ryan Frederick (Rebecca); six great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Paul, Hugh, Archie, Katharina and Johanna.

Also left to cherish her memory is her brother Robert S. Quandt (Judy) as well as many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 from 4 to 7 pm at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville, NY. CEDAR FALLS – Richard “Dick” Frost, 82, of Cedar Falls died Tuesday, Jan. 21, at UnityPoint Health–Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

He was born April 24, 1937, in rural Oelwein, son of Joseph and Sophia (Caseldine) Frost. He married Gloria Knapp on May 24, 1958, at Albrook AFB in Panama.

He graduated in 1955 from Sacred Heart High School in Oelwein and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed as an inspector with John Deere, retiring in 1995. He owned and operated Frost Arabians and Dick’s Sharp-All.

Survived by: his wife; four sons, Larry of Des Moines, Randy (Debra) of Belleview, Fla., Allen (Jaynie Mason) of Cedar Falls, and Scott (Deb) of Waverly; 11 grandchildren, Nicole (Connor) Williams, Mackenzie (Ryan) Young, Kayla (Josh) Rozanske, Amanda Frost, Joe Frost, Megan Frost, Josh (Kelsey) Smith, Shawn Frost, Ryan (Lauren) Frost, Trianna Hall and Jaeden Hall; and 10 great-grandchildren.

CEDAR FALLS – Robert “Chuck” Charles Willett, 85, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

He was born Feb. 22, 1934, in Oelwein, son of Ralph “Tex” and Frances (Luther) Willett. He married Ethel Davis on Jan. 16, 1954, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. She preceded him in death June 13, 2010.

Robert graduated from Oelwein High School and worked with his father. Together they manufactured Texson Truck Campers in Waterloo. He passed the business down to his family and in retirement split his time living between Arizona and Iowa.

Survived by: six children, Jacque, Rik, Rory, Jill, Ryan and Rex; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Teri.

WAVERLY — Delores Mae Boevers, 87, of Waverly, died Monday, Jan. 20, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly. She was born Nov. 11, 1932, in rural Waverly, Bremer County, daughter of Ernest and Amanda (Steidler) Oltrogge. On Oct. 12, 1952, she married Burton W. Boevers at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn. Burton passed away July 4, 2019.

Delores graduated from Readlyn High School in 1951 and worked for the Lutheran Mutual Insurance Co., Waverly, from 1951-53. She and her husband made their home on the Boevers family farm east and north of highways 3 and 63. The couple farmed there for over 35 years before moving into Waverly in November 1987.

Delores started playing the church organ at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn when she was only 14 years old. After her marriage, she continued to be the church organist, active in the women’s group, and a faithful member at St. John Lutheran Crane Creek for many years.

He was born Jan. 25, 1936, in Cedar Falls, son of Robert and Marion Squires. He married Connie J. Creeden on Dec. 27, 1957. They divorced. He married Marilyn J. Hawker on June 27, 1986. She preceded him in death.

Harold graduated from Cedar Falls High School and continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa with a B.S. in education. Harold worked for John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works and retired years later.

Don graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1953. He worked part time for his dad through school and full time after graduation. He moved his family to Las Vegas and partnered with his father, forming Bartlett & Son Construction. Don and his family moved back to Waterloo resuming the construction trade, forming Don Bartlett Construction.

He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He was born June 15, 1944, in Waterloo, the son of Lawrence William Sr. and Viola Schnieders Westemeier. He married Mary Kay Fisher on June 10, 1967, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Waterloo.

Thomas served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was employed with the Waterloo Fire Department for many years, retiring in June 1999. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as the secretary/treasure for Knights of Columbus Council 700.

Survivors include: his wife; his son, Tim (Alison) Westemeier of Milton, Ga.; his daughter, Cindy (John) Bamford of Oelwein; seven grandchildren, Cassie, Corrie Anne, Brian, Ian, Jeremy, Michael, and Blakely; five great-grandchildren with two on the way; two brothers, LeRoy (Norma) Westemeier of Jesup and Gene (Joan) Westemeier of Arizona; two sisters, Mary Jo Schneider of Waterloo and Susie (J.R.) Hendricks of Marion.

Waterloo — Bernard Francis Sand, 96, passed from this life at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown on January 17, 2020.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 27, at St. Edward Catholic Church. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 2 p.m. rosary. Burial will be Tuesday, 11 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Cemetery, Nebraska City, Nebraska.

Bernard was born October 20, 1923, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, the son of John Joseph and Laura Gude Sand.

He was a 1940 graduate of St. Bernard’s Academy in Nebraska City. At age 18 he voluntarily joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving from 1942-1946 as a pilot with the 13th Troop Carrier Squadron, Pacific Theatre of Operations. During World War II, Bernard flew cargo planes, hauled supplies, and carried wounded soldiers, never failing to complete a mission. He was awarded the Air Medal with one cluster.

Following his honorable discharge, he served as a Captain in the Reserve Air Corps while attending Creighton University in Omaha. He graduated from Creighton School of Medicine in 1953, served his internship at Receiving Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, and completed his residency in general surgery at Wadsworth General Hospital, Los Angeles, California.

Bernard practiced general surgery in Waterloo, Iowa, from 1959 until retirement in 1992. He continued to assist in surgery until age 91. He practiced medicine skillfully with precision and compassion, treating all his patients equally, and caring for many patients without pay. He decried waste in the health care system, and during his long medical career, gleaned surplus and useable second-hand medical equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars for transport to Central American hospitals facilitated by the Iowa City Rotary Club. He was totally devoted to medicine, yet he never lost his love of flying and often said what he enjoyed most was piloting a plane.

On August 17, 1950, Bernard was united in marriage to Barbara Bischof at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City. They were married for 67 years ending with Barbara’s passing in March, 2018.

Bernard loved his large family and was the fixer of all things broken — rebuilding swing sets and fences, repairing and refinishing furniture, spending part of every Christmas in the basement mending toys.

He was a woodworker — his largest piece a beautiful, sturdy, and long bench for the kitchen table. He made hundreds of rosaries by knotting nylon cord and gave nearly all of them away to anyone who needed one. He planted trees and the obligatory annual tomato garden. In his 60s and 70s, he competed in racquetball tournaments and exercised regularly until the last month of his life. He had a very independent nature and until age 94 did much of his own house and yard work.

Bernard was also dedicated to St. Edward Church, volunteering as a frequent lector and, later in life, as a daily sacristan.

He is survived by his ten children: Sr. Helen Anne Sand, RGS, Paris, France; Mary Sand (Von Kaster), Ames, IA; Martha Christians (Gary), Lehigh, IA; Rita Maniotis, Berwyn, IL; John Sand (Melinda), Leawood, KS; Mark Sand (Rose), Omaha, NE; Beth Giddens (Gary), Monmouth, OR; Paul Sand (Karen), Redwood City, CA; Peter Sand (Diane), Urbandale, IA; Sara Sand, Cedar Rapids, IA. He is survived by his 27 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, John Joseph, two infant sisters, and his dear wife, Barbara.

She was born April 2, 1928, in Shell Rock, daughter of Roy and Ervilla Davis Scoles. She married Frederick W. Kezar on July 18, 1948, in Austin, Minn. He died June 17, 1999.

Aleen was employed in cafeteria and custodial services with the Waterloo Community Schools for 20 years, retiring in 1990.

Survivors include: three sons, James Kezar of Mason City, Richard Kezar of Thompson and Michael (Beth) Kezar of Forest City; two daughters, Colleen Mills of Waterloo and Vernice (Paul) Delk of Cedar Falls; a stepson, Frederick Kezar of Cloudcroft, N.M.; 28 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Cindy (DeLancey) Harris

Cindy (DeLancey) Harris passed away on January 9, 2020.

After being diagnosed with a terminal illness in October 2019, she lived life to the fullest, making wonderful memories during the short time she knew was left.

She was born a whirlwind of force to David and Betty DeLancey on August 21, 1953. She graduated from West High in Waterloo, Iowa.

In 1970 she married Steven Sampica and moved to California where she loved the ocean so much sharks couldn’t keep her out of the water.

Fate eventually led her to Texas where her life got bigger and better. She started a career at GTE/Verizon, retiring after 25 years. In 2003 she married her Texan, Roger Harris, who loved and cared for her until her last breath.

Cindy was wild, fun-loving and adventurous — she even climbed the Brandon water tower in her youth. She was the cool grandma who just might plant a bit of rebellion in her grandchildren’s heads, or slightly embarrass them as she danced ‘60s style to “These Boots are Made for Walking,” sometimes even on a table. She was a great big sister. Family events always involved hysterical bouts of laughter. She was constantly reading a book or two — true crime fascinated her the most. She was undeterred by the smoke-ridden casino and could spend entire nights having fun while family members had to retire to hotel rooms for fresh air. She always wore red on Friday in support of our troops. She was Cindy, and we will always love and miss her.

CEDAR FALLS — Frances Mae Michaelsen, 95, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 19, at Pinnacle Specialty Care.

She was born in Sumner on Sept. 30, 1924, to Arthur and Barbara (Fritz) Traeger. She married William Michaelsen on June 8, 1946, in Waterloo at the Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church. He died April 5, 2003.

Fran attended American Institute of Business and started her working career at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo. For 48 years she worked for Medical Associates of Waterloo and Covenant Hospital. The majority of the time she was the medical assistant for Dr. Albert Dolan. She retired in 2002. She was an active member at Kimball Avenue United Methodist Church in Waterloo.

Survived by: three daughters, Kay (Vince) Lopez of St. Peters, Mo., Karen McCoy of Waverly and Karla Kramer (Jim Jensen) of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

FAIRBANK — Robert J. Wellner, 88, of Davenport, died Friday, Jan. 17, at Genesis East.

He was born April 28, 1931, in Fairbank, son of Oliver and Nellie (Shannon) Wellner. He married Bess JoAnn Magee on Dec. 30, 1950, in Dunkerton.

Rob retired from Alcoa (Arconic) in 1992 after 40 years. Rob was inducted into the Iowa State Bowling Hall of Fame and served as president of the Davenport Bowling Association in 1986.

Survived by: his daughters, Jill Sager of St. Louis and Marney (Todd) Tope of Davenport; his grandchildren, Paul Sager (Todd Pettit), Jill E. Huff, Eric Sager (Carrie), Kelsey, Mason, Brennen and Mallory Tope; his great-grandchildren, Albert Huff III and Zoey Huff, Evan Sager and Breanna Berry; three great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Cletus Wellner (MaryAnn); and his sister-in-law, Dawn Fisher.

Preceded in death by: his wife; his son, Richard; and sister Marie Reichen.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at St. Paul the Apostle Church, Davenport, with burial in Davenport Memorial Park at a later time. WATERLOO — Frank L. Hansel Sr., 75, of Waterloo, died Friday, Jan. 17, at UnityPoint Health–Allen Hospital.

He was born Dec. 7, 1944, in Waterloo, son of Marshall and Estella (Vaughn) Hansel. He married Mun Song Duk in 1988; she preceded him in death on March 21, 2013.

Frank served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He worked as a machinist at John Deere for 30 years until retiring in 1996.

Survivors include: five sons, Frank (Helen) Hansel Jr. of Independence, Marshall Hansel of Traer, Keven (Kat) Rand of Texas, Ben (Denise) Rand of Waterloo and Mike Wilson of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Steve Glaspie of Aplington; and sister, Judy Stiles.

Preceded in death by: his parents; a son, Scott Austin; two brothers, Dave Hansel and Jim Glaspie; and a sister, Judy Hingtgen.

HAZLETON — Leonard Dale Ohl, 89, of Hazleton, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, at NorthCrest Specialty Care in Waterloo.

He was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Buchanan County, son of Charles Walter Ohl and Leta Bell (Wroten) Ohl. On June 12, 1965, he married Mary Louise Brown in Hazleton. She preceded him in death.

Survived by: a daughter, Lenora “Lonnie” (Merlin) Polok of Waterloo; three sons, Leonard (Amy) Ohl, Jr. of Independence, Lyle Ohl of Hazleton and Leon (Ronda Buchtela) Ohl of Vinton; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Virginia (Richard) Steen of Waterloo and Evelyn (Owen) Brickman of Harpers Ferry.

Hartnett, Kevin J. of Andover, MN, formerly of Boston, MA and Jesup, IA on Jan 14 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Beloved husband of Lynn Booth of MN, dear father of Kristen and her husband John McCann of New York and Andrew and his wife Laura of Philadelphia. Loving grandfather of Owen and Madeline of New York and Colette and Amelia of Philadelphia and Olive of MN. Brother of Elaine Hartnett of Weymouth, Jocelyn Loftus and Kathleen Golden of Milton, Michael Hartnett of Attleboro and Marian Hartnett of Framingham. And a kind and helpful friend to his wife’s children, Caitlin, Sean and Liam Berry.

Kevin earned an undergraduate degree from Northeastern University and a graduate degree in physics from MIT. He spent his 34 year career working for Honeywell then Raytheon as a radar engineer in the Marshall Islands, Japan and the United States.

Beyond work Kevin’s interests were broad and varied. He was a skilled woodworker, a member of the Cedar Valley Woodworkers, and teacher in many workshops. He volunteered at the Cedar Rapids Theater and the Lyric Theatre in Anoka, MN, building sets for shows and working backstage as a stage hand.

He built many things for those in his life including a crib for his grandson, and child sized tables and chairs for great nieces and nephews. He was an accomplished photographer, competitive tennis player, and hiker.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Cindy (DeLancey) Harris

Cindy (DeLancey) Harris passed away on January 9, 2020.

After being diagnosed with a terminal illness in October 2019, she lived life to the fullest, making wonderful memories during the short time she knew was left.

She was born a whirlwind of force to David and Betty DeLancey on August 21, 1953. She graduated from West High in Waterloo, Iowa.

In 1970 she married Steven Sampica and moved to California where she loved the ocean so much sharks couldn’t keep her out of the water.

Fate eventually led her to Texas where her life got bigger and better. She started a career at GTE/Verizon, retiring after 25 years. In 2003 she married her Texan, Roger Harris, who loved and cared for her until her last breath.

Cindy was wild, fun-loving and adventurous—she even climbed the Brandon water tower in her youth. She was the cool grandma who just might plant a bit of rebellion in her grandchildren’s heads, or slightly embarrass them as she danced ‘60s style to “These Boots are Made for Walking,” sometimes even on a table. She was a great big sister. Family events always involved hysterical bouts of laughter. She was constantly reading a book or two—true crime fascinated her the most. She was undeterred by the smoke-ridden casino and could spend entire nights having fun while family members had to retire to hotel rooms for fresh air. She always wore red on Friday in support of our troops. She was Cindy, and we will always love and miss her.

WATERLOO — Richard Vincent Carlson, 68, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Nov. 17, 1951, in Belle Plaine, son of Eldo and Betty (Shedenhelm) Carlson. He married Peggy Doering on May 27, 1972, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hubbard.

Rich graduated from Independence High School, and then received his bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University, where he was a member of the wrestling team and Triangle Fraternity. He worked as a city planner in Kansas City, Kan. and in parks administration in West Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. Most recently, Rich was a self-employed landscape designer and contractor. He was very proud to have designed and built many playgrounds across the state as well as his role in the development of Waterloo Memorial Stadium. Rich was a longtime member and past president of Faith Lutheran Church.

Survived by: his mother, of Waterloo; his wife; a son, Brandon (Wendy) Carlson of Farmington, Minn., and a daughter, Brooke (John) Heuer of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Jaden and Maia Carlson, Bailey, Betsy and Brady Krantz and Rubi Heuer; two brothers, Gerald (Sandy) Carlson of Clarion and Alan (Lynn) Carlson of Independence; two sisters, Marilyn Panosh of Littleton, Colo., and Kathy (Steve) Draisey of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; his mother-in-law, Lue Doering of Iowa Falls; two sister-in-laws, Sue (Neil) Graber of West Des Moines, and Diane (Denny) Kappel of Iowa Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born Feb. 5, 1963, in Waterloo, son of Leon and Dorothy “Joan” (Trager) Otting. He married Sheri Huber on Jan. 10, 1987, in Cedar Falls.

David was a graduate of North Tama High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa. He was a U.S. Postal carrier in Cedar Falls for 17 years and was a member of NALC Branch 219.

Survived by: his wife; his son, Thomas Otting of Ames; two brothers, Terry (Mary) Otting of Gehanna, Ohio, and Matthew (Beth) Otting of San Antonio, Texas; and four sisters, Julie (David) Poe of Cedar Falls, Sara (Dan) Coleman of Albany, Ga., Amy Otting of Traer and Laurie (Patrick) Williams of Round Rock, Texas.

CEDAR FALLS — Ami Kathleen Dark-Rosen, 48, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Jan. 16, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

She was born May 27, 1971, in Topeka, Kan.

Ami graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1989 and from the University of Northern Iowa in 1994 with a degree in education and later earned her master’s degree in special education in 2013. She was a payment representative for the past six years at Veridian Credit Union in the Fiscal Solutions division, and was a published author, “Stronger Through Christ: A Mother’s Memoir.”

Ami was a member of Hope City Church in Waterloo and Alpha Delta Pi sorority at the University of Northern Iowa. She was selected to serve as the poster child for JDRF in 1979 and 1980 and was Miss Wheelchair of Iowa in 2004.

Survived by: her daughter, Sarah Rosen of Cedar Falls; her parents, Judi and Hank Dark of Cedar Falls; a sister, Beth (Scott) Ochsner and their children, Katherine, Anne and Luke, and a brother, Mike (Angie) Dark, and their children, Reese, Landon and Miles, all of Cedar Falls; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

WAVERLY — Laura Ellen (Garred) Hemmes, 74, of Waverly, died at home Wednesday, Jan. 15, due to a glioblastoma brain tumor.

She was born in Manistee, Mich., on June 3, 1945, to the Rev. Willard and Arlene (Holmes) Garred. On June 11, 1965, she married her Bill Hemmes.

Laura graduated from CAL (Latimer) High School in 1963 and then attended Grand View College for two years; she received her B.A. degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1968 and did graduate work at UNI. She and her husband moved to Aplington and then to Waverly. She taught family and consumer science at Tripoli High School and then stayed home with her children when they were born. Several years later, Laura began teaching GED classes part-time. This led to a more full-time job teaching GED and working with the adult literacy program through Hawkeye Community College. She also set up classes and developed curriculum for businesses which needed to upgrade the skills of their employees. Later she worked in the Workforce Development office with unemployed and underemployed workers.

Laura has been a member of Waverly Health Center Hospital Auxiliary Board, Waverly’s Friends of the Library Board, and Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Survived by: her husband of 54 years; two children, Holly (Frank) Hansen of Des Moines and Marc (Diana Laughlin) Hemmes of Estes Park, Colo.; her mother, of Des Moines; her siblings, Al (Leslie) Garred of Lafayette, La., Melanie (Karl) Kopperud of Palmer, Alaska, and Rose (John) Walter of Shenandoah; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Preceded in death by: her father; and her sister, Margaret (Peg) Hines.

OELWEIN — Evelyn Vera Reiter Pfiffner, 90, of Oelwein, died at home Thursday, Jan. 9.

She was born on March 9, 1929, in Centerville to Loyal and Ruth (Arney) Barnes. She married Elmer Reiter on Feb. 13, 1948, at St John’s Lutheran Church in Fairbank. He preceded her in death July 23, 1980. On March 9, 2002, she married Cletus Pfiffner at St. Francis Catholic Church, Barclay near Dunkerton. He died Feb. 15, 2018.

Evelyn graduated from Dunkerton High School in 1947. She and her husband Elmer lived on the family farm north of Fairbank. She worked as a bookkeeper beginning in 1960, first for Don’s Truck Sales and then Woods Construction. She then became the city clerk for the city of Fairbank until retiring in 2000. She continued to live on the farm until she moved to Oelwein in 2002.

She was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fairbank and the Fairbank American Legion Auxiliary.

When she wasn’t working she enjoyed spending time in the kitchen baking with Cletus. Evelyn made one of the world’s best pumpkin bars. She also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino, feeding and watching the deer and wildlife in her back yard, being around people. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.

WATERLOO — Stephen L. “Steve” Drilling, 59, of Waterloo, died at home Thursday, Jan. 16.

He was born July 15, 1960, in Waterloo the son of Gerald and Joanne Maxfield Drilling. He married Jana Havelin on Sept. 12, 1997, in Waterloo; they were later divorced.

Steve attended Hawkeye Community College, receiving his degree in electronic engineering. He was a self-employed computer repair/programmer and had worked for Computer Reboot in Waterloo. He served in the U.S. Army.

Survived by: his significant other, Barb Haas of Waterloo; three daughters, Stesha Drilling, Darlene Horstman and Amanda Gilall of Cedar Falls; two sons, Kyle Drilling of Waterloo and Jacob (Marina) Higuera-Drilling of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Kayla Rohovit, Leiana Gil, Felix Mira and Aika Higuera-Drilling; one brother, Marty (Marie) Drilling of Waterloo; six sisters, Jody Maxfield of Des Moines, Gina (George) Wagner of Norwalk, Peggy Drilling of Jesup, Maureen (Andy) Apel of Gilbertville, Rose Ivy of Evansdale and Mary Terry of Independence; Lilly Neessan; and many nephews and nieces.

Steve enjoyed music, movies (especially Star Trek), computers, reading, writing and building models. He wrote and published the book Dimensions.

Charlene Patterson Chestnut Buck (72) passed away at her home in Rockport, Texas (formerly of Cedar Falls) on January 7, 2020.

Services will be held Tuesday February 25, 2020 at Orchard Hill Church, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Visitation for family and friends will be from 9-10 a.m. at the church followed by a Celebration of Life at 10 a.m.

Hats encouraged but not required. A private family burial will take place immediately following.

Lyle D. Murty

WATERLOO — Lyle D. Murty, 90, of Waterloo, died on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at MercyOne Waterloo.

He was born on May 30, 1929, in Waterloo son of Joseph (Gladys “Peggy” Burke) Murty. He married Genene “Gene” Nichols on Sept. 9, 1951, at Grace Methodist Church in Waterloo.

Lyle graduated from Montour High School in 1947. He was drafted and served with the U.S. Army Battery B, 955 Field Artillery, achieving the rank of sergeant during the Korean War. After the military, he worked at Weyerhaeuser Paper Co. for 38 years as a die mounter, retiring in 1992.

Lyle was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church for 45 years until their closing in 1996, then joined Kimball United Methodist Church. He has been a lay leader, a member of the staff parish, trustee, and head usher. He volunteered with the Community Meals once a month.

Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Vicki (John J.) Wiese of St. Louis; a son, Lance (Mary Chaffin) Murty of Portland, Ore.; five grandchildren, Beth, Sarah, and Andy Wiese, and Daniel Murty and Greg Chaffin; brothers, Joe (Pat) Murty of Clinton and Lawrence Murty of Tama; a sister, Shirley Deal of Marshalltown; and sister-in-law, Barbara Murty of Chelsea.

Preceded in death by: his sisters, Sharon Stern, Barbara Hartsoe, and Beverly Graff; brothers, Richard and Dennis Murty; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Murty.

Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the Kimball United Methodist Church, with military rites by the Evansdale AMVETS Post No. 31 and Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery at a later date. Family will greet friends an hour before the services at the church.

Lyle was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts – 50 years with the Winnebago Council — and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award that a local council can bestow on a volunteer for rendering outstanding service to scout youth. He enjoyed taking rides on the trails throughout Northeast Iowa.

Alfred N. Fowler

ALFRED NOEL FOWLER, Captain, USN, (Ret.) passed away on January 14, 2020. He was a resident of New Bern, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn. Alfred, known as “Punk” to family and friends, was born on August 29, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa. He married his high school sweetheart, Kathryn (Katie) Shadle, on September 8, 1945. The profound love they shared as teenagers would last 70 years. He loved to tell tales of their lives together, of his boyhood with his brother Bob, and of their family connections, instilling a vision of perseverance and adventure that took the couple from their Iowa roots to a career in the military that included 16 moves before they finally settled in a Washington, D.C., suburb after his Navy retirement in 1974.

Captain Fowler graduated from Parks Air College (now Parks College of St. Louis University) in 1948 with a degree in Aviation Operations. He was commissioned an Ensign, USN, and after completing Navy flight training was designated Naval Aviator in 1949. With Katie’s loving support, his career as a naval aviator evolved for the next 26 years. His memoir, Hurricanes to Antarctica – Tales of a Naval Aviator, highlights their journey and the wonderful yet challenging life of a military family. His companion book, “Poems From Punk — The Complete Collection,” tells the story of young love and dreams for the future during an uncertain time for our country.

Captain Fowler served as a pilot, navigator, and after attending the Naval Postgraduate School, a flight meteorologist in the Navy Hurricane Hunter squadrons based in Miami and Jacksonville from 1950-1957. He and his crew accomplished many low-level penetrations of the Atlantic area hurricanes. At that time, there was no other way to determine the location, size, and intensity of these dangerous storms.

His shore assignments included a tour as NROTC instructor at Tulane University and attendance at both the Naval War College and the Air War College, where he earned a master’s degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. He served as Executive Officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge including a deployment to the South China Sea during the Vietnam War. He then completed a Joint Chiefs of Staff tour at the Alternate Military Command Center in Fort Ritchie, Maryland.

In 1972 he became the Commander U.S. Naval Support Force Antarctica and Commander Task Force 43. He was the first captain in that job following a series of seven admirals starting with Adm. Richard Byrd. The military task force command included ship, aircraft, station and logistics operations, as well as the assignment as Senior U.S. Representative in Antarctica. He spent two six-month summer operating seasons “on the ice” and oversaw the completion of building a new station at the geographic South Pole. While serving as a LTJG in the Navy, his son, Tom, was able to travel to McMurdo Station, Antarctica, for a visit. On February 13, 1973, father and son flew in a C-130 to the South Pole and became the first ever father and son to be at the South Pole together.

After Captain Fowler retired from active naval service he took the position of Deputy Division Director of Polar Programs at the National Science Foundation. During his 14 years at NSF, he returned to Antarctica several times to oversee management, logistics, and science support operations, as the responsibility and funding for the national program had been shifted from the Defense Department to the NSF. He retired from civilian government service in 1988.

For the next 11 years, Captain Fowler was employed at the American Geophysical Union in Washington, D.C., where he established the office and served as the first Executive Secretary for the International Council of Managers, National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP). He was directly involved in national and international Antarctic affairs for 25 years. He is the author of “COMNAP – The National Managers in Antarctica,” a memoir about a special group of people from various nations who were involved with the governance and stewardship of the continent of Antarctica. He has been honored by the naming of the Fowler Peninsula, a 100- by 200-mile geographic feature of the ice-covered coastline of West Antarctica on the west shore of the Ronne Ice Shelf south of the Weddell Sea. Captain Fowler’s military honors include the Legion of Merit Medal, Navy Commendation, and Antarctica Service Medal. He was a longtime member of the American Meteorological Society, the U.S. Naval Institute, and The Antarctican Society. Al was a member of the West New Bern Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. Previously, Al and Katie belonged to the Fairfax Presbyterian Church where he was proud to serve as a deacon. They lived in the Mantua neighborhood in Fairfax, Virginia, for 38 years.

Here are his two most important lessons for life. First, “When flying a big multi-engine airplane very low over the ocean in a hurricane, keep your wings level.” And second, “Never forget that when it comes to having a wonderful life, the more you give, the more you get.” He often said, “The secret to a happy marriage is choosing the right spouse.”

Captain Fowler is survived by a son and three daughters: Alfred’s son, Tom (Marilyn) Fowler and their daughters, Beth (Matt) Maxwell, their children Will and Kate; and Carol (Evan) Renneker and their daughters Madeline and Evy; and son, Rob Fowler; and Alfred’s three daughters: Becky Fowler; Susan Fowler, her daughters, Natalie (Curt) Douglas and their children, Ethan, Isabella, and Tyler; and Lindsay (Joe) Scardino, and their daughter, Rosalie; and son Justin (Pamela) Brown and their children Tyler (Cindy), their son, Leon; Chandler, Brynn, Gabriella, and Nathan; and Alfred’s daughter Janine (Ken) Sellers, and their son, Kurtis Hunt. In addition, he leaves behind a host of loving extended family members.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, January 25, at West New Bern Presbyterian Church at 3 pm with Pastor David Fuentes officiating. A reception will follow immediately at the family residence. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.

Edith J. Law, age 90 of Wahoo, NE and originally from Sumner, IA, however raised her children in Medford, OR, died on Monday, January 13, 2020 at Life Care of Elkhorn.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sisters, Jean Appleby and Janice Leech; and her son, Charles Law.

Edith is survived by: her children, Steve (Martie) Law of Waterloo, NE, Robert (Christine) Law of Puyallup, WA and Linda Law of Bellevue, WA; a sister, Lorraine Leech of Davis, CA; along with three grandchildren, Steven Law, Zoe Law and Sam Law; and two great grandchildren, Michael and Mila.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and time. The Reichmuth Funeral Home of Elkhorn, NE is caring for the Law family at this time.
