MEDINA – Michael J. Lang, age 51, of Medina, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2024 at the Medina Memorial Hospital following a brief battle with cancer.

Born September 1, 1972 in Medina, he was a son of Gloria (Pritchard) Lang. Mike was an avid fisherman. He held his captain’s license in charter fishing. Mike was a crew member of Mister Sportfishing Charters out of Point Breeze and fished in tournaments on the Mister Squirrelly Sportfishing team.

Survivors include his two daughters, Jorgie Lang (Zacherie Ehrenreich) and Courtney Lang; granddaughter, Eleanor Ehrenreich; his mother, Gloria Lang; sister, Amy Lang; two nephews, Jacob Grier and Kaleb Hungerford; aunt, Cheryl Gavenda; cousin, Michelle (Tyler) Palmer and their son, Jack; close friends, Jonathan Forder, Steph Paris and Levi Forder; and the rest of the Mister Squirrelly’s Sportfishing family.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Friday, June 21 starting at 4PM at the Junior Wilson’s Sportsman’s Club, 3875 Bates Rd., Medina. MaryAnn (Dock) Salisbury, 85, passed away peacefully at the Martin Linsin Residence on May 28, 2024.

She was born September 9, 1938 to Reno and Ella Dock in Detroit, Michigan. The family relocated to Albion in 1941. MaryAnn graduated from Albion High School in 1955, and attended the University of Rochester, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree, and her RN license. She married Donald Salisbury in 1960. MaryAnn worked at the former Arnold Gregory Memorial Hospital in Albion, and as the facility nurse at Owens Illinois in Brockport before returning to Arnold Gregory. In 1971, she became the Assistant Director of Nursing at the Orleans County nursing home. In 1984, MaryAnn began working at Orleans County Mental Health as the Director of Friendship House, a treatment program for individuals with chronic mental illness. She retired from the County in 1985, and took a part-time position as an administrative assistant at Genesee Orleans Ministry of Concern, while also working as a private care nurse.

MaryAnn was dedicated to the community, and volunteered for decades. She served on the Board of Directors for the former Little People’s Center, Head Start, and Community Action. She coordinated the volunteer scheduling for the annual Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign for many years, and volunteered as a bell ringer for that program, as well as volunteering for Hospice.

MaryAnn was predeceased by both of her parents, her husband, Donald, and special friend, George Lang.

She is survived by her children: Sean (Janet) Salisbury of Poughkeepsie, Jamie Salisbury of Albion, and Jed (Shayna) Salisbury of Rochester, as well as her 4 grandchildren: Annabella (Kyle Davey) Salisbury of Hamburg, Caitlin ( Erich Pflegl) Salisbury of Albion, Brendan Salisbury of Boston, and Jonathan Salisbury of New York City.

Calling hours and a celebration of MaryAnn’s life will be held at Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home 21 West Ave. Albion, NY 14411 on June 21st starting at 2pm until 4pm with her celebration of life service held at 4pm.

MEDINA – Sidney E. Lovell, Jr., 81, of Medina, passed from this life to eternal life on Friday, June 7, 2024.

Sid was born in Williamsville, NY on June 10, 1942, a son of the late Sidney E. Lovell, Sr. and Marianne (Schickler) Lovell.

He was the eldest of seven children. Sid graduated from Williamsville High School in 1960. He then served in the US Army Reserves with the 85th Engineering Battalion out of Webster, and was honorably discharged in 1969.

Sid married the former Donna J. Munson on February 14, 1979. Sid held various managerial positions with General Electric, Bo-Mer Plastics and Fisher-Price Toys. Lastly, he worked as a crew leader in job development for Orleans County.

Sid was an exceptional athlete in football, baseball, track & field and wrestling. His greatest love was slow-pitch softball. Sid served as the Softball League Commissioner for Orleans County for over 25 years. There was not a day that went by that he could not be seen on the ball fields in Medina, preparing them for little leagues and men’s and women’s softball. His softball career culminated in his induction into the NYS USSSA Hall of Fame in March 2010.

Sid was predeceased by both parents and his brothers, Robert and Gary Lovell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Donna J. Lovell; daughter, Beth Goodman; sons, Sean (Sheila) Lovell and Scott (Sarah) Lovell; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Marianne Pearson, Jane (Cecil) John; and brothers, Howard Lovell and Brian (Terri) Lovell.

Calling hours will be held on his birthday, Monday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina. His funeral service will immediately follow at 12 p.m. and interment with full military honors will be in West Ridgeway Cemetery. ALBION – Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Bailey transitioned peacefully to her heavenly home with her family at her bedside after an unexpected and quickly progressing illness. As our mother, sister, and grandmother, she was taken far too early from us.

Becky’s creative mind and light spirit were shared with the world from her youngest years to her final days. She was a skilled seamstress and made many of her own fashionable clothes for herself and her sisters during high school, and for her children throughout their lives. She trained as a private airplane pilot in her younger years. She enjoyed interior decorating according to clever themes using unique items that she found while thrifting and bargain shopping.

She discovered jewelry-making of her own accessories, as well as beading eye-catching items for her daughter-in-law and granddaughter. She refinished furniture found on roadsides into household centerpieces and beautiful accent pieces. She fawned-over her beloved canine companions Pepper and Robbie. She was enraptured by murder-mysteries and true crime exposés. She would research, compare, and painstakingly select the best birthday and Christmas gifts. She loved to laugh, and to listen to the adventures of her children and grandchildren.

In recent years, her greatest affections were invested into her sons, her grandchildren, and her job that she did not want to retire from. Joshua (1979-) and Patrick (1983-) were honored to have Becky as their mother, especially because most of her middle years involved sacrifice and devotion to their care and support. Amelia (2015-) and Finn (2017-) received their grandmother’s admiration and interest whenever they met. And her workplace colleagues and friends at the Monroe-2 Orleans BOCES received her warmth, positivity, careful attention for work tasks and social connections alike.

Becky was predeceased by her eldest sister Carol E. (Bailey) Basinait (1950-1989), her mother Alice (Hucknall) Bailey (1927-2020), and father Carson H. Bailey (1925-2022). She is survived by her loving and devoted son Patrick Carson Kirby (1983-), who grieves deeply for the loss of his rock and pillar; her eldest son Dr. Joshua Aaron Kirby (1979-), his wife Dr. Rebecca Jane (Morgan) Kirby, and grandchildren Amelia Jane Kirby and Finn William Kirby; sisters Nancy (Eddie) Zielonko, Janice (John) Travis, and Molly (Craig) Tuohey; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to recognize the undaunted professionalism, expertise, and compassion of the entire staff of the Batavia United Memorial Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit. Without people like Marie, Kirstin, Taylor, Amanda, Austin, Mary Anne, Thomas, and many other nurses, doctors, and specialists who provided round-the-clock never-give-up intensive medical care in the face of long odds, Becky would have had far less of a chance at life.

ALBION/ROCHESTER – Thomas W. Hockenberry, III passed away on June 3,2024 at the age of 98. Tom was born in Wilkinsburg, PA to Thomas W. Hockenberry, Il and Mary Rice Hockenberry.

Proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 in the amphibious forces in the Pacific. He retired from Eastman Kodak in 1989 and was the photographer for his wife’s seventeen books featuring vintage teddy bears and animals. He and Dee traveled the world together and visited over 64 countries. He was a skilled carpenter and model ship builder.

Tom was predeceased by his parents; wife Dee of seventy years; son-in-law Jerry Fasano; brother Charles and sister-in-law Cathy Hockenberry; and brother James Hockenberry. Survived by his son Eric; daughter Candace; sister-in-law Joann Hockenberry; niece and nephew Kathi and Jerry Hartgrove; several cousins; and other nieces and nephews. IOWA CITY – Thomas Vosteen, 80, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully with family by his side on May 30, 2024. Born on February 7, 1944, in Buffalo, New York, to B. Earle and Mary (Sinclair) Vosteen, Tom was destined for a life filled with French flair and a lot of laughs.

Tom’s journey began at Medina High School in Medina, New York. From there, he moved on to Dartmouth College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in French. Not one to stop there, Tom collected a Master’s Degree in French from Middlebury College, another Master’s in French and Education from the University of Iowa, and ultimately, a Ph.D. in French from the University of Iowa. Clearly, Tom believed you could never have too many degrees—or too much French.

A lifelong educator, Tom taught French with passion and humor, retiring as a Professor Emeritus from Eastern Michigan University. His students undoubtedly left his classes knowing French and, more importantly, knowing how to laugh at life.

On February 10, 1990, Tom married Michele Favre in Iowa City. They made their home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before they settled back in Iowa City, after retirement.

Tom leaves behind his loving wife, Michele; stepdaughter, Sandrine (John) Gabriel; and grandchildren: Jackson, Katherine, and Sophie Gabriel. He also leaves his “sister” and lifelong friend, Peggy Hart Nelson, and nephews Bob, Bill and Jim Vosteen. Preceding him in this great journey were his brothers, Robert Vosteen and The Reverend J. Peter Vosteen.

In line with Tom’s laid-back and loving nature, cremation has been accorded, and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Private interment will take place in Medina, New York.

Tom was a loving husband, grandfather, and friend who loved to laugh and share joy. He was quoted in his later years saying, “Being alive is about loving people. Without love, what do you have?” It’s clear that Tom lived his life by these words, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.

So raise a glass, share a laugh, and remember Tom as the joyful, witty, and loving man he was. Cheers to a life well-lived, Tom!

HOLLEY – James Henchen, 64, passed away June 4, 2024, following a brief illness.  Jim was a graduate of Spencerport High School and was employed at SPX Mixing Co. for over 40 years.  Jim was very proud of his 40 years of service and had received many awards.  He was a man of all trades, enjoying welding, mechanics, and wood working.  Jim also enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid gun collector.  His greatest joy was spending time with his three daughters and his 5 and three quarters grandchildren.

He is survived by his three daughters Tamara (Gustavo) Ramirez, Haley (Wade) Braman and Samantha (Andrew) Rotoli; grandchildren Robert, Vyla, Huxley, Jameson, Kolt and soon to be, Elodie; cousin and best friend PD Foos; 3 brothers and 1 sister and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim’s family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home 16650 State Route 31, Holley on Wednesday June 12 from 4:00-7:00, followed by his funeral service at 7:00pm.

LYNDONVILLE – David R. Tower, age 45, of Lyndonville, died unexpectedly on Friday, May 31, 2024 at his home.

Born January 14, 1979 in Medina, he was a son of Sandra (Kennedy) Rodgers and the late Ronald Tower. Dave grew up in the Medina area and attended Medina Central School. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding dirt bikes and four-wheelers. Most of all Dave loved spending time with his children.

Predeceased by his father, Ronald Tower in 1980.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Sandra Rodgers of Lyndonville; son, Riley Tower of Medina; daughter, Skylar Tower of Lyndonville; loving friend, Miranda Tower; brother and best friend, Jason (Tiffany) Tower; sisters, Tara (Mark) Rader, Jillian (Ryan) Keller and Shelly Martin; grandmother, Shirley Tower; nieces and nephews, Justice, Dustin, Amber, Breah, Kaiden, Ava and Kennedy; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

WEBSTER – Nancy Ann Clary, age 73, affectionately known as Nanc, passed away on May 30, 2024 in her home of Webster, NY.  Born on November 30, 1950 in Medina, NY to Martha and Stanley Fraczak, Nancy was a cherished member of the Medina community, where she was born and raised and continued to enrich the lives of those around her.

‍Nancy graduated from Medina High School in 1968, started a job a Xerox and eventually moved to Rochester, NY and lived with her best friend Sue Finn.

In August of 1974, Nancy married the love of her life, Michael J. Clary, in a beautiful ceremony at the Sacred Heart Church in Medina, NY. Together, they raised two children of their own, Alana and Alan, along with step-children Steven, Kathy, and Laurie. They were blessed with five grandchildren: Stephanie, Sebastian, Reese, Addie and Avery. Nancy loved people. She could talk with a complete stranger for hours and could become new best friends immediately. Nancy was selfless with the biggest heart as she always thought about and put the needs of her family, friends, and pets first and did little for herself.  She loved her cats, who were like children to her, loved traveling, cooking family meals, putting on garage sales, and most of all loved shopping, finding a good deal and had a coupon for everything.  She would listen, observe and remember conversations.  She knew what everyone liked, didn’t like, and applied that to thoughtful gifts, meals, and anything to bring a smile to another person’s face.  Whether it was her own work, household tasks, kids school projects or sewing together Halloween costumes, she always devoted all her time and energy into everything she put her mind to and had the “will not rest until it’s done” mentality.  She taught her family to never give up on something and to give it their all.  Her generosity and selflessness is something that will live on forever through her kids and grandkids. ‍ Predeceased by her parents, Martha and Stanley (Slats), Nancy’s legacy of love, generosity and selflessness lives on through her family. She is survived by her husband Michael; her children, Alana (Michael) Letendre and Alan (Allison) Clary; step-children, Steven (Shawn) Clary and Kathy Clary; her grandchildren, Stephanie, Sebastian, Reese, Addie, and Avery; and her brother, Larry (Annette) Fraczak, along with their families. ‍ Calling hours will be Friday June 7 from 4-7pm at Falvo Funeral Home, 1295 Fairport Nine Mile Pt. Nancy Ann Clary will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her spirit of generosity and love will continue to inspire those who knew her. She will be deeply missed.

ALBION – Pamela Sue Ryder, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on June 2, 2024. She was born October 25, 1952 in Brockport to the late Louis and Nancy (Rittwage) Lunn.

Pam had a beautiful soul and left such an amazing footprint on this world. She was “Grammy” to all of her grandchildren and welcomed countless people into her home. She was a mother to many and touched so many lives. Pam was an active member of Albion Fellowship Church (Faith Alliance Church), spending over 20 years at the church and also running the “Kids of the Kingdom” program each and every year. She also was very involved in the “Samaritans Purse” program.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Patricia Rupnig and nephew Joshua Lunn.

Pam is survived by her children, Tracey (Josh Trapiss) Lunn, Kevin (Tricia Belcher) Ryder, Karen (Emmett) Morley, grandchildren Emily, Elliott, Brayden, Rilee, Macy, Miles, Maddisyn, Aidan, Bryson, siblings Dan (Meme) Lunn, Dusty (Disa) Lunn, loving partner Dean Harris, many nieces, nephews, cousins.

A memorial service to celebrate Pam’s life will be held at the Albion Fellowship Church 3305 Oak Orchard Rd.  Tonya E. Yanicki, 39, of Lyndonville, NY, passed away after a long, courageous battle with cancer on Monday, June 3, 2024, at Buffalo General Hospital.

She was born on November 15, 1984, in Medina, New York, the daughter of Nancy (Wise) Skellon and the late David Yanicki.

Tonya graduated from Lyndonville High School in 2002. She was a self-driven entrepreneur who loved the outdoors, especially playing with her three dogs. She enjoyed traveling and never met a stranger.

Tonya is survived by her mother, Nancy Skellon; five siblings, Gypsy Skellon, Brandon Skellon, Butch (Alicia) Yanicki, Eli Starr, and Hattie Starr and several nieces and nephews; her dearest friend, Mark Ellis and her three furry companions, Helix, Phoebe, and Onyx.

BROCKPORT – Jeffrey E. DeFrank, of Brockport, NY, passed away May 28, 2024 after a brief battle with cancer.

He was born September 18, 1970 in Rochester, NY.

Jeff was predeceased by his father, Gary DeFrank, mother, Jennifer Marcello and brother, Kevin DeFrank. He is survived by his brother, Glenn (Kimberly) DeFrank, half brother, William Michael (Deanna) Stover, his stepsisters, Tami Marcello, Tina (Karl Mueller) Marcello, and stepbrother John (Michelle) Marcello, nieces Kasey & Erin DeFrank.

GREECE NY/KENT – Michael Chervenic age 85, passed away peacefully June 2, 2024 at Rochester General Hospital. He was born November 20, 1938, in Colver PA, a son of the late John and Katherine (Datsko) Chervenic. Mike and his wife Rosalie were long time residents of Greece NY, moving to Kent for the past 22 years.

Mike was a proud graduate of Penn State and served in the U.S. Navy from 1960-1965 where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant. He retired from Monroe County in 1994. He enjoyed living on Lake Ontario and watching the beautiful sunsets from his home, golfing, and sailing; but most importantly, he loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Rosalie; children Michael W. (Gwynnen) Chervenic, Mary (Martin) Keutel, Lisa (Rick) Bickerton; grandchildren Emmy, Mike, Ricky, Katie, Timothy, Daniel, Jack; sister Christine (James) Baumgardner; brother Jack Chervenic as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday June 11th at 10:30 am at Holy Family Parish, 109 S. Main St., Albion NY 14411. Military Honors will immediately follow his mass. SHELBY – Ricky C. “Rick” Quackenbush, 69, of Shelby, NY, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2024, after a brief illness at the Hospice of Orleans, Albion, NY.

He was born on May 16, 1955, in Medina, NY, the son of the late Charles and Margaret (Pritchard) Quackenbush.

Rick graduated from Medina High School in 1974. After being together for 44 years, Rick married the love of his life, Dolores Wolters, on April 9, 2024. He worked various jobs, including painting cars, auto mechanic, Medina Cold Storage, and Birdseye, and finally retired from Associated Brands.

For over half a century, Rick was a pillar of the Shelby Volunteer Fire Company, dedicating 51 years of his life to serving the community. In his leisure time, he found joy in tinkering with small projects in his shop, attending area car shows, and cheering on his favorite football and NASCAR teams.

Rick is survived by his wife, Dolores Wolters, and three sons, Donald (Dana) Quackenbush, Carl (Deanna) Quackenbush, and Jake Quackenbush, all of Medina, NY. His three grandchildren, Logan, Maggie, and Maverick, also surviving are several siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

On Friday, June 14, 2024, from 2-4 PM, we invite you to join us at the Shelby Volunteer Fire Hall, 4695  S. Gravel Rd. Medina, NY 14103,  The Celebration of Life will commence at 4:00 PM, with the Rev. Russel Peters officiating. Your presence will be a testament to the impact Rick had on our lives.

UTICA – Elaine Barbara Eckart, age 90, died June 1, 2024 in Wynn Hospital following a long illness.  She was born March 18, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY and had lived most of life on Long Island and in Florida.

Elaine was a member of the Order of the Easter Star, an over 72 year member of the United Church of Christ, a Past Matron of Ashawaugh Chapter and the Canal Side from 1987.  She loved to travel, enjoyed reading knitting, crocheting, cooking and baking for her family.  She spent over 8 years travelling the Country prior to returning to this area to help her daughter.  Mrs. Eckart was predeceased by her parents John and Edna Stemmermann, sisters: Martha Mengelstor, Edna Loesche, Barbara Stemmermann, Dorothy Gibson and John Stemmermann.

She is survived by her daughter: Karen (William “Bill” ) McAllister, 2 sons and one other daughter, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

MEDINA – David A. Bogden, 84, of Medina, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024. He was born June 13, 1939 in Medina, a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Shibilski) Bogden. David grew up on his family’s farm and graduated from Medina High School. He loved farming and stayed working on the farm for many years. He was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Trinity Parish, St. Mary’s Church in Medina. David also volunteered delivering food for Meals on Wheels for 34 years.

Survivors include his siblings, Katherine Haroney of Virginia, Daniel Bogden of Medina and Sr. Barbara Bogden, OSF of Buffalo; and sister in-law, Marcia Bogden of Medina. Predeceased by his brother, Robert Bogden.

His memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 6 at 9:30AM at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina, NY 14103. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

MEDINA – Alfred Dean Vail, 90, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2017, in Northglenn, Colorado. He was born on July 12, 1927, in Medina, NY, to Clarence Dean Vail and Berenice Ellicott Vail.

Alfred grew up in a rural area of Shelby Township in western NY. He graduated from Medina High School in 1945 and went on to the University of Colorado in Boulder. He had a notable career in the aerospace industry, enjoyed skiing, and had a passion for automobiles and airplanes.

Ruth Ann (Myers) Vail, 90, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024, in Arvada, Colorado. She was born on June 17, 1933, in Brooklyn, NY, to Lester James Myers and Inez Ruth (Boyle) Myers.

Ruth grew up in western New York, graduated from Medina High School in 1951, and went on to Buffalo State Teachers College. She dedicated her career to elementary school teaching and volunteered at Denver International Airport.

The couple married on July 3, 1955, and moved to Sun Valley, Idaho where they began to raise a family. They relocated to Denver, Colorado a few years later. The family then moved to Northglenn, Colorado, where Al and Ruth would reside for nearly 60 years.

Their marriage was marked by shared adventures, extensive travel, and active participation in their community and church. Together, they created a loving home and raised four sons. They are survived by two of those sons, three daughters-in-law, grandchildren and a great-grandchild, Al’s sister, Ruth’s brother, nieces and nephews, and extended family. Alfred and Ruth’s legacy continues to be felt through the lives they touched and the family they nurtured.

A graveside committal service to honor both Alfred and Ruth will be held on Saturday, June 15 at 11 a.m. at the Mt Pleasant Cemetery in West Shelby, NY, where they will be laid to rest together, symbolizing their enduring partnership and love. RIDGEWAY – Robert L. “Bob” Schutt, age 93, died May 30, 2024 in Medina Memorial Hospital. He was born April 28, 1931 in Brockport to Frederick and Anna (Minard) Schutt and had lived in this area all of his life.

Bob worked for over 40 years as a supervisor for the FMC Company in Middleport and was one of the founding members of the Crusaders Motorcycle Club. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, riding motorcycles and animals. He especially loved smaller breed dogs and had rescued many of them to give them a loving home and a fur-ever family.

Mr. Schutt was predeceased by his wife, Beverly; his brother, Edward Schutt; 2 sisters, Mildred and Betsy Schutt; and a grandson, Scott Schutt.

He is survived by his sons, Edward (Suzanne) Schutt of Albion and Louis Schutt of Medina; his granddaughters, Amanda (Justin) Dixon and Amy Schutt; 5 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews and a sister-in-law, Kay Hare of FL.

There will be no prior calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Bob’s life at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home, 21 West Avenue-Albion, (please note the date,) Saturday, June 15th beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

MARYVILLE – Howard A. Geiger, age 74, passed away at home in Maryville, TN, on January 1, 2024. Howard was a Scout Master of Troop 25 in Lyndonville, NY. He was a loving father, husband, Papa, and friend, and will be missed dearly.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Ruth Geiger, sister-in-law Cheri Geiger, Brother-in-law Paul Schmitt and guide dog Tanya. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol (Schmitt) Geiger, sons Howard (Jennifer) Geiger, Charles Geiger, and Steven (Christina) Geiger, daughter Marcie (Chad) Waterson, 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, brother Robert Geiger of Medina, NY, sister Carol (Victor) Bobzien, brother-in law Allen (Anita) Schmitt, sister-in-law Char Wisniewski, sister-in-law Shawn Drysdale and several nieces and nephews.
