Forest fire crews battling major blaze in South Jersey

A “major” fire burned across a wooded-area of Cumberland County late Thursday, according to emergency responders.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service was working to contain the blaze in Downe Township, the agency said on Facebook. An initial report said the flames scorched a 250-acre area.

The fire was reported in the Millville Wildlife Management Area, according to state Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Brendon Shank.

“The Forest Fire Service is currently working to establish containment and no structures are currently threatened. Additional details will be provided as the situation develops,” the spokesman said in an email late Thursday.

Local firefighters also responded to the scene near Ackley Road, according to the Downe Township Fire Rescue and Dive Team.
