Do I need specific cycle travel insurance?

Yellow Jersey’s Cycle Travel Insurance is designed specifically for cyclists, mountain bikers and triathletes.

Most travel insurance excludes anything other than leisure riding and will usually exclude all cycling if that is the primary reason for your trip.

We cover cycling regardless of your event, be it a family holiday, charity cycle ride, the Ironman World Championships or downhill mountain bike racing in Morzine.

The policy even covers heli-rescue in a medical emergency.

Ask yourself two questions about your travel insurance -

Have I checked it covers holidays where the primary purpose is cycling?

Have I checked it covers me if I'm taking part in a timed event?

Our Cycle Travel Insurance covers emergency medical expenses, repatriation, and trip cancellation on top of lots of other features you'd expect from a travel insurer. Our travel insurance policies also include coverage for Covid 19 related claims.

EHIC/GHIC card protection is only valid if you are taken to a state hospital in Europe.

Most mountain resorts only have private hospitals whilst state hospitals are few and far between in most of Spain and Portugal.

In much the same way as you buy travel insurance for winter sports, we have made travel insurance for cycling simple and easy to understand. Buying travel insurance for cycling and triathlon has always been needlessly complicated, so our aim has been to make the cover we offer people cycling abroad absolutely clear.

Our Cycling Travel Insurance has been designed specifically for cyclists riding, training, and racing abroad.

Cycle SPECIFIC or GENERIC TRAVEL?

Following our detailed customer research, we realised many people were unaware that travel insurance provided by their work or bank accounts excluded claims if they came off their bike whilst on a cycling-specific holiday. Some travel insurers will cover cycling if it’s an incidental part of your holiday, i.e. you hired a bike for a day with your family, but not if the trip’s primary purpose is cycling. So if you were racing an Ironman in Austria, taking on the trails in Morzine, or simply training with club mates in the Pyrenees, your average travel insurance is likely inadequate. Similarly, a Global Health Insurance Card, or GHIC, is not designed to replace travel insurance and shouldn’t be relied on while riding abroad.

No matter where you are or what type of cycling you enjoy, if you have Cycle Travel Insurance with Yellow Jersey, you can relax and ride with complete confidence that you’re covered for medical mishaps.

If you are taking several trips over the course of the year, it may work out as better value to take out an annual policy.

Annual or Short Term

A Travel lots, pay less

By spreading the risk over 12 months, we can reduce the rates for you, while still providing cover for every race, holiday and training camp you enjoy abroad.

Our annual policies also include winter sports cover, so purchasing an annual travel insurance before your cycling trip in the summer could save you the hassle of finding another insurer before your skiing trip in the winter.

B No commitment

For those who don’t travel so frequently or don’t want the commitment we also offer short term, single-trip policies. Whilst these are obviously more expensive pro-rata, they offer great flexibility and the same cover afforded to regular travellers.

Discounts

With discounts available for Families and Couples, there is no need to purchase separate annual travel insurance if you’re not all going to be riding. If you travel with you partner we offer them a 50% discount.

For a family policy with two adults, your first child will be added to the policy for half the price, and any more will be added for free. The same discount is available for single parent families where you pay for one adult.

If you are organising a trip with your cycling club, our group discount allows parties of 5 – 10 people to travel on one policy with a 5% discount.

Since active people rarely confine themselves to a single discipline, our annual policies also include free winter sports cover.

Cycling travel insurance quotes are based on a 35-year-old single male traveller, and the maximum trip length for annual policies was set at 30 days for all policies where the option was given. The cycle travel insurance quotes are done on a similar level of cover to the Yellow Jersey cycle travel cover. Yellow Jersey cycling travel insurance offers a large variety of cycling and triathlon activities as standard, including ironman, mtb and BMX racing which are considered extreme sports by other providers. Yellow Jersey cycle travel insurance includes winter sports as standard on annual policies. Quotes accurate 23/02/2023. Many travel insurance companies include 'cycling' under their list of covered activities but then restrict the type of riding you can do.
