Court documents: Pregnant woman stabbed to death inside Nixon home

NIXON, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — An investigation is underway after a pregnant woman was stabbed by her boyfriend inside a Nixon home, according to court documents obtained by News 4.

According to the documents, police responded to a home off Tule Street in Nixon shortly after midnight on Dec. 15. When police arrived, they found three kids in the front room of the home who said their mom had been stabbed. Officers found the victim, who has been identified by the Washoe County Medical Examiner's Office as Amanda Davis, 37, face down in the master bedroom.

Authorities tried to render aid to Davis but she died on scene, court records show. Shortly after medics arrived, the three kids were heard screaming, "he's back, he's back!" Officers rushed the kids into the kitchen and found the man, later identified as Michael Burciaga, outside the home. Court documents say Burciaga, 33, told police, "I know what I did. That's why I came back." Police noticed a cut on the suspect's hand and began to render aid. According to documents, Burciaga proceeded to tell officers, "I already know what happened, and I know what I did, which is why I slit my wrist."

Once officers bandaged Burciaga's wrists, they took him to a local hospital for treatment. While on the way to the hospital, Burciaga told officers that Davis was pregnant with his child, according to the documents.

The children told officers that their mom's boyfriend stabbed her. Documents reveal that Davis tried to fight back but was unsuccessful in stopping Burciaga.

Davis was a registered member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. Tribal chairman Anthony Sampson released a brief statement sending his condolences to the Sander/Davis family. Sampson says there is no threat to the public and he is addressing safety concerns within the community.

Burciaga was booked into the Washoe County Jail on Dec. 17. He appeared in front of a federal judge for the first time on Friday. Burciaga is charged with second-degree murder within Indian Country.

A jury trial is set for Feb. 22, 2021. If convicted, Burciaga faces life in prison.
