CADET LAW PROGRAM for high school students

The Kansas Highway Patrol in cooperation with the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary annually hosts a one week law enforcement academy for high school students. The academy is held at the KHP Training Center in Salina every June. The Academy is meant to help young Kansans gain knowledge in a hands-on environment about the training and responsibilities of law enforcement officers, and specifically Kansas State Troopers.  

Applications are due by March 31 each year. 

KANSAS COLLEGIATE LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY

The Kansas Collegiate Law Enforcement Academy is a program that allows college students the opportunity to experience what Training Academy life is like before entering a career in law enforcement. Criminal Justice programs from colleges across the state work with the Kansas Highway Patrol to provide this real-world experience.

The program is modeled after the Cadet Law Enforcement Program, a one-week program held every summer for high school students between their junior and senior years of high school.

Participants in the collegiate program begin with an orientation that addresses the expectations of the students and the Academy. They also go through some of the same training that recruits in the Academy go through, such as Cultural Awareness, Search and Seizure, team-building, felony car stops, defensive tactics, firearms, driving team, and patrol car simulators. They also have practical exercises that take them through the firearms range, felony car stops, and emergency vehicle operations.

To participate in Collegiate Law, a student must be enrolled at one of the colleges the program is offered to, submit an essay on why they would like to attend and what the benefits might be, and receive the endorsement of a sponsor (who also must be present at the Academy during Collegiate Law). If accepted into the Academy, the student must pass a medical screening.
