(Unknown newspaper, submitted byFoFG, Date of Death: July 31, 1988) BOWMAN, MAGGIE Suicide of a young lady Miss Maggie Bowman, of Altamont, formerly of Oswego, committed suicide on Wednesday, the 13th inst. by taking poison.  The cause seems to have been derangement of the mind, which her near friends had known for some time, but kept it secret in the hope that she would soon recover.   Had the lady with whom she lived been apprised of their fears, this sad calamity might not have happened.  She seemed very despondent this winter, and repeatedly said she would take poison to get out of this unfriendly world, but all supposed she was joking.   On Monday, the 12th inst. she went to Oswego on the passenger train, walked from the depot directly to a drug store, procured the fatal drug and returned home on the freight train.  It is said she was not in Oswego more than ten minutes.  On Wednesday afternoon, as Mrs. Hoffman, the lady with whom she was staying, was preparing to take a drive, Maggie said to her, "What would you think to come home and find me dead."  Mrs. H. did not think she was in earnest.  After she had gone Maggie gathered all her clothes together, folded and laid them nicely away in her trunk, locked it and it is supposed then swallowed the deadly draught.  She then went out for a walk, going about ninety rods, and meeting several on the road smiled and spoke pleasantly to them.  She called at the post office, inquired for her mail and deposited a note.  From there she went to her father's house, told them she had taken poison, that no one was to blame, and it was too late to get a doctor as she would soon be gone, and in about five minutes she died.  Miss Maggie Bowman had been in our midst for over a year, and in all that time we have never seen anything but lady-like deportment from her.  She was a very sensitive, proud spirited girl, and if her position in life had been a more exalted one, she would never have had cause to imagine, or worry herself into such a condition.  She was a pure virtuous girl, and her many friends regret her untimely end.  Her father and sister Mrs. Julia James have the sympathy of all.  She was a cousin of Mrs. William Sanford of Oswego. -- Mrs. Jane Houston, Altamont, Kans., Mar. 20, 1883  (Oswego Independent, Friday, March 23, 1883, Page 3)

Four weeks ago Bruckman gave the girl a terrible beating, because she did not work to suit him in his cornfield. He then tied a rope around one of her ankles, fastened the other end of the rope to a rear axle of his wagon and drove to his barn a quarter of a mile off, dragging the girl behind. Arriving there, he locked her up in the barn without sufficient clothing and without food. The girl was found by her uncle and another neighbor, who carried her away, but her injuries were so serious that she died on November 22. Bruckman has long been an outcast among the farmers of Osage township. His ranch adjoins the notorious Bender farm and he was the nearest neighbor of the Bender butchers. After the horrifying crimes of the Bender family had become known and they had fled the country, Bruckman was visited one night by a mob of masked men who demanded to know where the Benders had gone. Bruckman insisted that he knew nothing of the Benders or their deeds, but he was strung up to the limb of a tree and held there until almost dead. Finally, however, he was cut down and allowed to go away, but ever since he has been shunned. (Morning Olympian ~ December 11, 1896) BRUNGARDT, JAMES P. Mrs. Bunnell had been ill for some time but seemed to be improving last week, until a turn came the latter part of the week. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Eddington and Mrs. H.G. Smith, the youngest daughter, Rebecca, died at Independence, Kans., October 15, 1879, and her only son, Daniel, died at the same place February 23, 1918. The funeral was held from the Eddington home Tuesday afternoon, Rev. T.M. Bell officiating and burial being in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Bunnell was born March 15, 1825, near Muncie, Ind., and was married to John W. Bunnell in Delaware County, Indiana, in 1844. To this union were born four children as mentioned above.  During the Civil War Mrs. Bunnell took care of the family and looked after the business affairs of the farm until the return of her husband from more than four years of service for his country. In 1869 the family moved to Kansas, first to Cherokee county and later to Montgomery county, living at the place now known as Tyro. There they lived for many years, numbering themselves among the pioneers of the state, enduring the hardships that only the earliest settlers experienced.  They later moved to Lancaster, Mo., where Mr. Bunnell died August 9, 1890. In 1907 Mrs. Bunnell came to Chetopa to spend her declining years with her daughter, Mrs. Eddington. When only a child Mrs. Bunnell joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and through her long life had always remained steadfast in the faith. It is seldom that one reads of a person living to such an age Mrs. Bunnell had reached. And when one does read of such a life, particularly when the person's life has been such a stirring one and so full of Christian spirit and hardihood, it is a sermon. Mrs. Bunnell's whole life has been one to test the metal of a man and her clinging to the Christian faith is enough to prove its value and to put to shame the man or woman who falters before the so-called hardships of these easy days. (Chetopa Advance, Chetopa, Kansas, Thursday, August 28, 1919, page 1, transcribed by Judy Mayfield)

Just two weeks prior to his death, Matt was taken to the insane asylum by order of the probate court.  The facts in the case are familiar to our readers.  From the time he was taken from here till his death he positively refused to eat a bite of food or take any nourishment there being a total collapse of both mind and body, and all that medical skill and treatment could do was done to build him up and restore his mind, but to no avail. Thus ends a very sad and strange case.  In one month's short time to be deprived of reason and life, and the cause of such a calamity unknown. The body was brought home, arriving here Wednesday morning, and the tunnel service was held at the Baptist Church at 5 o'clock p.m., conducted by Rev. W. R. Insurance book (multi-services agents, Allstate & State Farm agents)

City: Swink, State: Colorado

Licensed insurance agents, store-front multi-services business owners or desk holders contact me regarding my final expense book of business, if you are looking to make some extra money this quarter and large commission splits between you and wholesale insurers. Ask me how I got 100% first-year premium plus residuals. I left the business a few years ago and I still get contacted regularly by my clients who want to increase their funeral benefit or refer me to their friends and family. Also, you will have access to over 500 mail-in leads from baby boomers who want to leave something behind for their family before they pass. Some were never contacted before. **Some have insurance and want more, and with my current clients and referrals, you won't have to close at all, you just show up or direct them to your office, fill out some paperwork and collect hundreds of dollars.
