Claims-made vs occurrence coverage?

Claims-made coverage — by far the most common type of medical malpractice insurance — protects the policyholder against claims of negligence filed during the policy’s period. A doctor can still have a claim filed against them after a claims-made policy ends, so most doctors need to buy tail coverage to ensure they are protected. Occurrence coverage protects the policyholder against claims of negligence that occurred while the policy was in effect. This type of policy essentially has the tail policy cooked into the pricing, so there’s no reason to buy a tail insurance policy.
