Isle de la Motte, Vermont: Shrine of Saint Anne

The history of Isle de la Motte:

Here on Lake Champlain is one of the earliest settlements in what would eventually become the State of Vermont. From the beginning of the arrival of the Europeans, the area was placed under the protection of Saint Anne. By 1666, the French had erected a fort here as protection for the southern flanks attacks from the Montreal and Quebec. Mass was offered here, and a number of Indian converts baptized here in 1668, with the Bishop arriving by canoe.

If only the natural beauty were the main attraction, it would still be worth stopping here. But there is much more….an outside altar, grotto, Chapel, campgrounds and cabins. There is a sandy beach, and even a dock for those who wish to arrive by boat.

Facilities are open to groups and individuals.

The Café serves lunch Tuesday through Friday and a breakfast buffet on Sundays through Labor Day. There is a gift shop that is open from mid-May through mid-October, and items can be ordered throughout the year.
